Letting your Light Shine
As Christians we are supposed to let our light shine for Christ, and there are so many different ways to do this. God gives different talents to different people. Some have the talent to speak, sing, and teach. However, there are other talents out there that we may not recognize as easily as the above mentioned, such as; listening, praying, or just being a good friend. People watch us in everything that we do, even when we don't realize it, so we should always be aware of how, or rather who, our light is shining on.
Jennie had recently started attending church again after a long absence. Things in her personal life had been rocky, and she felt alone and scared. When she walked into church she was greeted by an old friend, Sheryl. Sheryl welcomed her with a big hug, and told her she was so glad to see her. Jennie was pleasantly surprised to see that someone cared so much, and began to tell Sheryl of the things taking place in her life. Sheryl listened and asked Jennie if she would like to meet later in the week. Jennie accepted the offer, and when she left she realized that she was not alone. She realized that people do care about her, and not everyone was judging her.
Although Sheryl did not realize the impact that she had on Jennie, she had changed her entire outlook. Now rather than feeling alone and scared, Jennie knew that there was someone who would listen, and she knew that she was welcome.
Sometimes it is the quiet talents that mean the most. Simply by listening and being a friend Sheryl had used the talents God had given to her to change the life of another.
We as Christians have an opportunity every single day to let our light shine. Sometimes it may be in the carpool line at your child’s school, or maybe on the bleachers at their ball game, but we have the opportunity to influence others. When these opportunities present themselves, there is always someone watching. It is up to us, however, to decide how bright our light will shine.
How can you let your light shine for Christ? There are countless answers to this question, but some of the simple ones are; look for the good in every situation. God has a reason for everything, and if we keep that in mind it is easier to let our light shine brightly for him. You can also teach your children to be kind to others, even if situations do not always have the desired outcome. Teach your children how to be good listeners, and teach them the importance of being a good friend to others.
